In order to ovulate, most women need at least 20% body fat. But just as being underweight can prevent ovulation altogether, being overweight can also alter your cycles by causing execessive production of estrogen, which interferes with the normal feedback system of the hormonal cycle. Some of the signs of excessive estrogen are prolonged periods of fertile cervical fluid buildup, delayed ovulation, and irregular cycles.
